Meryl Streep’s IMDB information. Seriously, only 2 Oscars? Don’t get me wrong.. I’m glad she won 84 other awards and got 90 nominations, but come on. The Academy is a big thing; Best Actress in a Supporting Role and Best Actress in a Leading Role are the only two awards guaranteed for a woman to win out of TWENTY FOUR. That means that about 0.08% of the awards go to the female gender; not even a full percent. Pure fuckery.
Do I even need to bring back Patrick Star and his comment about Meryl Streep and Oscars? Yeah. Didn’t think so.
Doubt (2008)
Oscar nominated role that should have won an Oscar but didn’t
Note: I am not bashing any other actors but merely giving my opinion
This was probably the one of most unjust things ever done to Meryl Streep. I still cannot comprehend the fact that just because one actor pops up and does a good role, they win an Oscar. (Not Kate Winslet’s case, but it was apparently “her time”) I believe that it isn’t about the sporadic film in an actor’s career, or for it to be their “time” to win an Oscar. I believe it is about the consistency in their work, and dedication to this form art that they deserve to win this award.
I could not recognize the genuine, heartfelt woman as I usually did. I saw a cold and conflicted woman. I also saw care (yes). We only saw Sister Aloysius’ face, and it was what we focused on; the intensity of her eyes, the curves of her lips. But I felt as she fought for the justice of the influence of power in her school, she also was fighting these demons within her. I could tell that when she proved a point to Father Flynn, she also proved something to herself. To see that so clearly in a character, and to develop such story within a frame of time is amazing.
Yet Meryl lost.
And if that isn’t enough, to have done two films (the other being Mamma Mia!) in two separate categories, and a two characters who contrast each other to the extreme in the matter one year, and not have won an Oscar for neither.. is the definition of “being robbed.”
I’m sorry, but Meryl Streep’s “time” has passed 16 times, and the Academy has done nothing but ignore it.
